FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

Figurative language is when you use a word or phrase that does not have its normal everyday, literal meaning.

1. SIMILE

•  The comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a descriptions more emphatic.

•    Usually it uses the word “like” or “as”

 

2. METAPHOR

*     figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison

•Example:

         This ice-cream has a rainbow of flavors.

          He is a pig.

                    You are my sunshine .

                         

3. PERSONIFICATION
*          Personification is  a figure of speech in which a thing – an idea or an animal – is given human attributes.

•  Example:

                                      The birds sang merrily every morning.

                                      The flowers danced gently as the wind blows.

                                      The Earth smiled as I plant this seed.

4. Alliteration 

* is a number of words with the same first consonant sound occurring together.

•Example:

•           Betty Baker bought a bit of Big Burger.

    Adam ate an apple.

         

 

5. Hyperbole 

*  is exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.

•Example:

•       I am very hungry that I would eat a horse.

•       I've told you to clean your room a million times!

•       I had a ton of homework.
